The Iditarod Dog Sled Race has taken place in Alaska for the last 33 years to commemorate a 1925 serum run
that mushers took from Anchorage to Nome to deliver serum and save children facing diphtheria.

Unless a person was vaccinated with this serum, contact with the diphtheria can cause death.
In 1925 during the winter months when the Bering Sea is frozen, the only way to reach Nome was by dogsled.
Mushers traveled to Nome the 1,049 miles night and day (127 1/2 hrs.) and prevented an epidemic.

For the last 33 years the Iditarod or "Last Great Race on Earth" has been a huge event in Alaska.
We checked for daily updates on the race that began on March 5th at www.iditarod.com.
