Let’s Make Layers

  Name:                                                 Class:

* Submit on separate paper.  May be neatly written or word- processed!

Purpose/Problem:  Which liquid is the most dense/least dense?

Research Questions:

q       What is the rule for density?

q       How do you know if something is more or less dense than another?

q       What is the density of water?

q       What is the difference between density and viscosity?  Yes, you will have to look it up.  Put it into your own words!

Hypothesis:

Materials:

1.                 8 small vials

2.                 4 liquids in squirt bottles

3.                 2 blocks or textbooks for steps

Procedure:

Using the above materials design a series of tests that will lead you to find the sequence of the liquids from least dense to most dense. Do not layer all liquids at once…layer in pairs!

Analysis:

q       Which liquid is always on the bottom? Top?

q       Will the layering of the liquids be affected by the order in which you squirt the liquids?

q       If a substance is more “gooey”, is it more dense?

Conclusion:

q       Was your hypothesis correct? Why/Why not?

q       Illustrate your vials. Be sure to label them!!

Extension:

q       Which is more dense- a stack of 5 pennies or a stack of 20 pennies? Explain.

Using 2 of your liquids, how could you mathematically prove that one liquid is more dense than the other?
