Modeling Phases

Facing the light bulb with the Styrofoam sphere in your outstretched hand, turn in a counterclockwise circle (right to left).  As you move through your 360º turn, stop about every 30º and look at how much of your sphere is illuminated. The lit portion of your sphere is the “phase.” Draw the phase at each position, using the circles below as your “Moon.” In the blank above each drawn phase, write the name of that phase: new moon, crescent, first quarter, gibbous, full, third quarter. Use the adjectives “waxing” and “waning” to indicate the part of the lunar cycle in which the phase is occurring.
